The Rental Heart and Other Fairytales by Kirsty Logan

Mini-Review

Beautifully written (very) short stories with gothic fairytale vibes. My favourites are:

  • ‘The Rental Heart’ – set in a world where you can rent mechanical hearts to avoid breaking your real one. Beautiful heartbreak imagery.
  • ‘The Light Eater’ – a woman starts eating Christmas lights to cope with her grief. Trust me – it’s beautiful and evocative. Flash fiction, barely two pages long.
  • ‘Origami’ – a woman starts making an origami man to replace her frequently absent husband.
