League of Liars by Astrid Scholte

Mini-Review

Cayder can’t wait to become a lawyer, prosecuting people who commit crimes using edem, a magical shadowy substance that can be used to bend time and which killed his own mother. But then his sister is arrested and he is forced to question everything he believed.

An accessible fantasy thriller for 12+, involving courtroom drama in the first half and heist-like action in the second half. The ending sets the novel up for a sequel rather than concluding solidly. It was a bit disappointing.
