Mini-Review

Miren is the last of the O’Malleys, a once rich and powerful family with dark links to the mer folk. Now she’s being married off to restore the family fortunes… but she’s not as tame as her grandmother thinks.

I highly recommend this dark-ish gothic low fantasy novel, set in a semi-fantastical C19th Irish-y world. Beautifully written with lots of adventure, studded with folk tales that come to have extra meaning.

(The audio book is read by a narrator with a gorgeous Irish accent as well – recommend.)

Fyi: lots of violent deaths (sometimes grotesque, but not graphic), brief mention of incest, child abandonment, brief mentions of spousal abuse, family secrets, imprisonment.
