Love & Other Great Expectations by Becky Dean

Mini-Review

Britt is a California girl and a talented soccer player… who’s no longer allowed to play contact sports due to a medical condition. There goes her life dream and her college scholarship, but she can’t bring herself to tell anyone. Unexpectedly, her English teacher (who is also actually English) invites her and three fellow students to compete in a literary scavenger hunt in England. The prize? $100,000… enough to pay for college if Britt wins. Britt’s not so keen on reading, but she loves adventure, so off she goes, meeting dishy British literature loving Luke along the way.

An easygoing & accessible sweet YA romance, with some humour, adventure and gaining of self-knowledge, and lots of easy literary references. I listened to the audiobook and initially found the narrator’s accent a bit annoying (a bit slow and r’s overpronounced for my Aussies tastes) and her British accents not so good, but I sped it up to 1.5 and that helped enormously. It took me a while to get into it, but I ended up enjoying it. Good characters and dialogue and I love a bit of intertextuality.

Fyi: injury, absent parents, friendship problems
