The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee

Mini-Review

An adventurous 18th century historical fantasy YA feminist romp. Felicity Montague wants to become a doctor, but is constantly rejected by the patriarchal medical institutions of her time. She grasps an opportunity to travel with Sim, a possible pirate, to see her former childhood best friend, Johanna, who is engaged to her medical idol, Dr Platt, hoping he will give her a place on an expedition. Swashbuckling adventures ensue.

No actual romance — Felicity is asexual/aromantic — although there are some LGBT romantic possibilities & side characters. Plenty of female friendship and third wave feminist perspectives: Felicity comes to realise that she’s unfairly judged others. A large friendly dog. Fantastical creatures.

Both amusing and thought provoking. I listened to it on audiobook and loved the narration by Moira Quirk – clear and engaging, with different and perfect voices for all the characters.

Fyi: sexism, violence, injuries, drug addictions, abduction, mild sexual allusions.
