Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Mini-Review

In a dystopian, militaristic, environmentally degraded society, Juliette is a 17 year old girl who has been locked in an asylum because her touch kills people. Suddenly she’s joined in her cell by a young man, Adam. She recognises him from her past. Why is he there?

This is very popular with students, and is certainly easy to turn pages on. It’s easy and accessible. I find its simple rendition of the ‘multiple male characters suddenly find the young female protagonist beautiful, special and irresistible’ trope a bit eye-rolling. There’s a lot of kissing. Dystopian chills & romantic thrills… but I won’t be lining up for the many sequels.
