The Unteachables by Gordon Korman

Mini-Review

The Unteachables are a group of year 8 students who have been judged to be too dim and unruly to learn, so they’ve all been put in the same class, in the same room, with only the one teacher. The teacher? Mr Kermit, a cynical and burnt out teacher who’s just trying to serve out another nine months until he can take early retirement. At first, all that happens is a lot of worksheets and no work, while Mr Kermit does crossword puzzles. But thanks to an enthusiastic ex-kindy teacher, a used car salesman, a truckload of vuvuzela horns, a lizard and a bunch of puffy-tails, their relationship begins to change…

I haven’t read Gordon Korman since I was in high school, and I’m so pleased to find that he’s still got it. A well constructed, funny read, perfect for year 8 students (or this adult reader).

Fyi: dyslexia, bullying, (historical) cheating, burn out.
