The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Mini-Review

Ada and her brother Jamie have been evacuated from London during WW2 and are billeted with grumpy Miss Smith, who is still grieving the loss of her partner Becky. But Ada loves being away from her abusive mother, who keeps her locked up and calls her ugly, due to her club foot. Ada starts to grow in confidence and Miss Smith, Ada & Jamie start to form a relationship, but will it continue? Or will the war or Ada’s mum cause them to part?

I enjoyed this book – like Goodnight Mister Tom, except for younger readers. This book is very popular at my high school for years 7-9, and is very accessible.
