Mini-Review
Eilis is a young woman from economically depressed 1950s Ireland who moves to Brooklyn, USA, in search of work. She fights homesickness and meets Tony, a young Italian American man. Just as she gets comfortable, tragedy strikes and she has to choose between her two worlds.
I enjoyed this novel – I found it sensitive, intimate and nuanced. I was particularly absorbed by its ending: what would Eilis do? A literary novel suitable for older students and those looking for a related text… would be good for Texts and Human Experiences.
