Shout by Laurie Halse Anderson

Mini-Review

Shout is an extraordinarily powerful verse memoir by Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Speak. She explores the casual violence and sexism known as rape culture she experienced growing up in USA, and that she hears about from thousands of young people who saw themselves represented in Speak. This is confronting but so important – when people talk about how fiction develops empathy, this is the sort of thing they mean.

I used to avoid verse novels, but now I’m kinda sold. Many content warnings – senior fiction.
