Review
Mace’s article ‘Teens and the “Book Slump”: Why We Should Diagnose a Situation Rather Than an Identity‘ sensibly calls attention to how the language we use around teens can affect how they view themselves. By describing a teen’s lack of reading mojo as temporary, e.g. as a “book slump”, we can avoid encouraging their longer term identification as a non-reader. It’s just a temporary lull. They’re between books. They’re on the look out for their next great read.
Mace also points out that even very keen readers can experience book slump after they finish an intensely enjoyable book. Very true!
A good reminder to watch our words. Short article – recommended read.
