The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

Mini-Review

This prequel to the Hunger Games tells the story of a teenage Coriolanus Snow and his experience mentoring Lucy Gray in the (10th?) Hunger Games. Coriolanus is an ambitious A student, gunning for a university scholarship because, although he comes from a high class old money Capitol family, they lost their fortune in the war. He has trouble just getting enough food, but he’s still keeping up appearances, not wanting anyone to know of his family’s troubles. Then Lucy Gray, a beautiful and talented singer from District Twelve, becomes his tribute and his carefully laid plans start to come unstuck…

Another page-turner from Collins.

Fyi: death, alcohol and drug use. Still suitable for year 7 and up.
